Self-hosted PC or managed game server: which fits your crew?
Compare home hosting and paid game-server hosting across availability, networking, maintenance, security, backups and real operating cost.
Hosting on a spare PC is excellent for learning and short experiments. A paid server becomes useful when the group needs the world available independently of one person's computer, connection and schedule.

Who must keep the world available?
A home-hosted world depends on the host PC being powered, awake, updated and connected. That can be perfectly acceptable when everyone plays together and one person enjoys operating the server.
A separate hosted server suits crews that join at different times or do not want progress tied to one member's machine. It does not remove administration, but it changes who provides the always-running hardware and network connection.
Check the network path
Home hosting may require router changes, firewall rules, a stable address or a relay service. Carrier-grade NAT and restrictive internet providers can make inbound connections difficult. Upload capacity and household traffic also affect the experience.
A hosted plan normally gives the game service a data-centre network path and a panel-managed address. Players still need a good route to that location, so test latency with the actual crew instead of treating geography as a guarantee.
Compare the operating work
Both choices need updates, access control, backups and troubleshooting. At home, the operator also owns hardware health, power, router configuration and the effect on the household connection. With a hosted plan, the operator still manages the game through the panel while the provider manages the underlying machine and service environment described in its terms.
Ask who will respond when an update breaks a mod, who can restore a world and where account credentials are stored. The operational owner matters more than the label attached to the server.

Calculate the complete cost
For self-hosting, include hardware wear, electricity, storage, backup space and the operator's time. For paid hosting, include the recurring plan, any upgrades, the billing currency and the cost of keeping independent backups.
Use the same time period for both options and avoid assigning a fake dollar value to convenience. The right answer is the one the crew can operate reliably and afford without resentment.
A simple decision rule
Choose self-hosting when the project is experimental, the group plays together, the network permits it and an operator wants the responsibility. Choose a managed game server when the world should be independent of one home PC, multiple people need panel access or the crew values a predictable monthly service over maintaining the underlying host.
If the choice is still unclear, run a short test with the smallest workable setup and evaluate a real play session. Keep the world backed up so the decision remains reversible.
