Read the startup error before changing anything
Use the log from the restart that failed, not an older session. Search for the plugin's name near startup and read the first error plus its surrounding lines. Record the Paper version, plugin release and Java runtime used to launch the server. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what fixed it.
UnknownDependencyException
The named required plugin is missing. Check the author's dependency list and install the supported dependency release.InvalidDescriptionExceptionor invalidplugin.yml
Check that this is a Paper-compatible plugin, not a Forge or Fabric mod. Download it again from the project's trusted source if the file is incomplete.- Ambiguous plugin name
Two releases of the same plugin may be installed. Keep one supported release; move the other JAR out while the server is stopped. UnsupportedClassVersionError
A class was compiled for a newer Java runtime. Check which class the error names and the runtime actually launching the server; this is different from a missing dependency.- Unsupported API version
Check the plugin's supported server versions. A declaredapi-versionnewer than the server prevents loading; editing the declaration does not make incompatible code compatible. - Plugin name never appears
Check the active server's working directory and the JAR placement below.
The PaperMC installation reference explains the dependency, description and duplicate-name errors. For Java failures, use PaperMC troubleshooting and the requirements for your Paper version, plus the plugin author's requirements. Do not assume one Java version fits every server release.
Check the file and the right plugins folder
Put the trusted, Paper-compatible .jar directly in the server's plugins directory, not inside a plugin-named subfolder. If the download is a ZIP, extract the intended plugin JAR first. A file ending in .jar can still be the wrong download: Forge and Fabric mods do not become Paper plugins by moving them here.
server-directory/
paper.jar
plugins/
YourPlugin.jar
This is an example layout, not a filename requirement. Check the directory used by the running server, especially when you keep more than one test or production copy. Download from the project's official page or a trusted listing linked by its author; avoid random JAR attachments.
PaperMC links Hangar and Modrinth as places to find plugins. Check the project's loader, supported versions and author before installing; a repository listing alone is not a compatibility guarantee.
Install or replace it with a clean restart
- Stop the server cleanly and wait until it has exited. Save a backup of your worlds, configuration and existing plugin files before changing the installation. See the backup checklist.
- Confirm the plugin release supports your server software and Minecraft version, and check its required dependencies.
- While the server remains stopped, put the JAR in the top-level
pluginsfolder; avoid leaving duplicate releases there. - Start the server and read the new startup log. Use a full restart rather than
/reload;/paper reloadis for Paper configuration, not plugin installation. - Run
pluginsin the server console or/pluginsin-game with the necessary access. Green indicates enabled; red indicates disabled or a loading failure. Then test the feature you installed.
Check PaperMC's command reference for the status display and reload guidance, and its update guide before a larger upgrade. Keep a known working backup rather than deleting plugin settings as a first troubleshooting step.
For updates to an existing plugin, Paper also documents a plugins/update folder: put replacement JARs there, leave the running plugin JARs untouched and restart to apply them. Back up first and stay present to check the result. This update mechanism is separate from putting a first install directly in plugins.
Still stuck? Share a small, useful diagnostic
Give the plugin author or support team the exact plugin release, Paper version, Java runtime and first relevant startup error with nearby lines. Review that excerpt before posting it: redact passwords, tokens, connection credentials and private addresses or player details. Never post a whole configuration archive or a secret-bearing log just to ask for help.
If the error names another plugin, check that project's requirements too. Test suspected conflicts on a backup or separate test copy, keeping dependencies together. The official troubleshooting guide explains how to narrow plugin conflicts. A new hosting plan will not fix an incompatible JAR.
Planning a Paper server?
Compare Paper, Vanilla, Spigot and Purpur or check FWG's current Minecraft hosting details. Before ordering, confirm your intended plugins and setup with support; do not assume every third-party plugin or upload method is supported.
